Dr. Scott Bonin, DDS
A Windsor dentist with a straightforward philosophy: take the time to know you, educate before we treat, and coordinate every step. 24 years of clinical dentistry for Sonoma County families.
Education & Early Career
More than 24 years of clinical experience
Dr. Scott Bonin has been helping patients feel comfortable and cared for in the dental chair for more than 24 years. After earning his Biology degree from UC San Diego, he attended the University of Southern California, where he received his Doctor of Dental Surgery in 2002 through a health professions scholarship.
His early career included serving as a Navy dentist and completing a General Practice Residency at Balboa Hospital, where he gained extensive training in both routine and complex dental care. The Navy residency at Balboa was an intensive, hospital-based program that exposed him to a wide range of cases, from straightforward restorative work to complex trauma and emergency management. The discipline, teamwork, and calm-under-pressure approach he developed in military medicine still shapes how he practices today.
Since transitioning to private practice, Dr. Bonin has continued to pursue advanced training rather than relying on school-era knowledge. He is an active participant in Spear Education, one of the most respected continuing education institutions in dentistry, where he studies advanced restorative dentistry, occlusion, and complex case management with some of the country's leading clinicians. He is also an Invisalign Silver Provider, a credential awarded for consistent case experience and outcomes with the clear aligner system. Dentistry moves quickly, and he stays current so his patients benefit from the best of what the field knows today.
Approach
Philosophy of care
Since 2011, Dr. Bonin has made Sonoma County his professional and family home. Patients often describe his approach as calm, reassuring, and attentive; qualities especially appreciated by those who feel nervous about visiting the dentist.
Dr. Bonin understands that dental anxiety is real and often rooted in past experiences. That's why he offers safe and effective sedation options to help patients begin treatment comfortably. Over time, many patients who once needed sedation discover, with his gentle care and encouragement, that they can undergo visits confidently without it. Helping people make that transition from fear to trust is one of the most rewarding parts of his practice.
His clinical philosophy is conservative by design. Given a choice between saving a tooth and extracting it, he almost always favors saving. Given a choice between a filling and a crown, he chooses the filling when the remaining tooth structure supports it. Given a choice between restorative treatment now and careful monitoring of an early lesion, he often recommends watchful waiting with a clear re-evaluation timeline. This mindset comes directly from his training: treat the disease, preserve the biology, and do not add treatment the tooth does not need. Many new patients arrive having been told they need extensive work at another office, and a second opinion from Dr. Bonin often reveals a simpler path forward.
Equally important is how he talks with patients. Dental terminology can feel inaccessible if you have not worked in a clinical setting, and a patient who does not understand what is being proposed cannot give informed consent. Dr. Bonin shows patients their X-rays, points to the tooth on an intraoral camera image, uses analogies that make sense, and answers every question without making anyone feel rushed. If you need to go home and think about it, you go home and think about it. If you want a second opinion, he will support that.
Helping people make that transition from fear to trust is one of the most rewarding parts of the practice.

Outside the Office
Life as a dad
Outside the office, Dr. Bonin is devoted to his family. He is a proud parent of two young children, Cameron and Aniyah, who keep him young at heart. Whether he's building Lego creations, playing house, or dancing around the living room during family dance parties, he treasures the chance to be playful with them.
He also enjoys trail running and volleyball, and values the balance of professional life, family time, and community connections that living in Northern California provides.
Continuing Education
Always learning
California requires licensed dentists to complete continuing education hours every license cycle. Dr. Bonin exceeds that minimum every year. He invests the extra time because dentistry is changing quickly: materials science, digital scanning and planning, implant protocols, aligner orthodontics, and adhesive dentistry all evolve in meaningful ways every few years. Spear Education provides the advanced coursework he uses to stay ahead of that curve, with hands-on workshops and case-based seminars led by clinicians at the top of the field. Whether the topic is reading complex occlusal patterns, improving cosmetic outcomes on anterior teeth, or refining treatment planning for worn dentition, he brings what he learns back to the practice and applies it to patient care.
He also reads the literature. When guidelines change (for example, updated recommendations on antibiotic prophylaxis before dental procedures, or newer evidence on adhesive bonding agents), he updates his protocols accordingly rather than defaulting to how he was trained in 2002. Dentistry done well is a lifelong apprenticeship.
Clinical Approach
Diagnosis before treatment
Modern dentistry offers an impressive array of tools, but tools alone do not make a good outcome. What matters most is accurate diagnosis followed by the right intervention at the right time. Dr. Bonin uses digital radiography for routine imaging, intraoral cameras to document visual findings, and photographic records for cosmetic cases. When 3D imaging is indicated (implant planning, complex endodontic cases, or anatomical uncertainty), he coordinates with a local imaging partner to obtain a CBCT scan and reviews it in detail before planning treatment.
For implants specifically, Dr. Bonin handles the restorative phase: the crown, abutment, and the coordination of prosthetic design with the surgical plan. Surgical placement is referred to a trusted oral surgeon, because that arrangement produces better outcomes than having one dentist try to do everything. Knowing when to refer, and to whom, is one of the most underrated skills in dentistry.
