General Dentistry

Comprehensive exams, professional assessments, and preventive strategies designed to catch problems early and keep your smile healthy.

About This Service

A routine dental exam is your first line of defense against decay, disease, and the emergency appointments nobody wants. When you haven't been to the dentist in years, or you're new to an area, a thorough evaluation tells you exactly what's happening in your mouth. Most patients come in thinking they know the story. We often find cavities in spots they can't see, gum changes that need attention, and signs of grinding or jaw tension they've lived with so long they barely notice anymore.

General dentistry is about understanding your mouth as a system. Your teeth don't exist in isolation. The way you bite, how your gums fit around your teeth, your saliva flow, your habits, your health history, all of it matters. That's why Dr. Bonin spends time on a first visit asking questions, examining with care, and taking diagnostic images. He's not rushing to a diagnosis. He's building a baseline so he knows what normal looks like for you, and what needs attention.

At Bonin Dental Care in Windsor, preventive exams are the cornerstone of everything we do. We believe most dental problems are easier and less costly to manage early. Whether you're a new patient scheduling your first appointment or returning after time away, we focus on giving you clear information about your oral health status and a realistic plan to keep your teeth strong.

Is This Right For You?

Who Benefits Most From General Dentistry

Anyone with natural teeth benefits from regular comprehensive exams. This includes children starting around age 3 or 4, teenagers navigating diet and hygiene changes, working adults managing stress and time, and older adults with complex histories of dental work. Patients who have neglected dental care for years, or who are new to Windsor or Sonoma County and need to establish care with a dentist, particularly benefit from a full diagnostic workup. People with a family history of gum disease or decay, smokers, and those with health conditions like diabetes are candidates who especially benefit from careful monitoring.

Patients are not good candidates for preventive exams only if they are actively declining all treatment and want no guidance on their oral health. That said, even resistant patients often shift their perspective after one honest conversation with a dentist who isn't pushing them into unnecessary work.

Our Approach

Why Patients Choose Bonin Dental Care For General Dentistry

Dr. Scott Bonin graduated from USC with his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree and completed a U.S. Navy General Practice Residency, a rigorous one-year program in complex patient care, hospital dentistry, and evidence-based practice. He's been in clinical practice for over 20 years, spending his days with patients from Windsor, Healdsburg, Santa Rosa, and the surrounding communities. He's a member of the American Dental Association, California Dental Association, and American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, and he stays current through Spear Education programs. That breadth of training means he recognizes patterns. He sees the connection between how you breathe, how you bite, and how your teeth wear. He notices early signs of disease others might miss.

At Bonin Dental Care, we use digital X-ray technology that lowers radiation exposure and gives us crisp, immediate images to discuss with you. Our practice has been established since 1993, relocated to our current Windsor location in 2006, and built on the principle that preventive dentistry is smarter than reactive dentistry. We have the tools, the training, and the time to do exams thoroughly.

Patients tell us they appreciate the explanation. We don't talk down to you, and we don't overwhelm you with jargon. We show you what we see, answer your questions, and give you realistic options. Our 5.0-star rating and 225+ reviews reflect the trust patients place in us. We file insurance claims as a courtesy and can walk you through patient financing options so cost never becomes a barrier to care.

What to Expect

From First Visit To Final Result

Your consultation appointment typically lasts 60 to 75 minutes. You'll fill out forms covering your health history, medications, and dental concerns. Dr. Bonin will take time to listen to what brought you in and what your goals are. He may ask about symptoms you didn't think to mention, grinding, jaw clicking, dry mouth, sensitivity. These clues matter. The physical exam is methodical. He'll examine your teeth, gums, bite, jaw joints, and soft tissues, using a mirror and gentle instruments. You'll feel a professional hand and hear clear narration of what he's checking and why.

Digital images are taken to assess what's hidden. You'll see these images on our practice screen so you understand exactly what he's identifying. The cleaning, if needed, removes the hardened buildup your home care can't reach. You might feel slight vibration and hear water spray. Most patients tolerate this well. If you have sensitive teeth or gums, let us know before we start.

After the exam, Dr. Bonin will sit down with you (not standing over you) and review his findings. He'll show you problem areas, explain the significance, and outline options. If treatment is needed, he'll discuss timing and cost considerations. If you're healthy, he'll reinforce what you're doing right and recommend how often to return. You'll leave with a printed summary and a clear picture of what's next.

Before You Decide

Costs, Insurance, And Timing

Your first comprehensive exam helps establish your baseline. The scope and cost depend on what needs to be evaluated. If you're a new patient or haven't had a complete workup in years, full-mouth X-rays and extra time are often necessary and appropriate. If you're a returning patient with a current exam on file, your appointment may be shorter and more focused. Insurance coverage varies by plan; most dental plans cover preventive exams and cleanings at no out-of-pocket cost when performed by an in-network dentist. We file insurance claims as a courtesy. For patients without insurance or with high deductibles, we discuss options upfront and can provide an itemized estimate before any treatment begins.

Treatment timelines depend entirely on what you need. If your exam shows you're cavity-free and your gums are healthy, you might schedule a follow-up cleaning in six months and routine exams annually or as recommended. If issues are found, we prioritize based on urgency and your schedule. An emergency (like a broken tooth causing pain) moves to the front. A small cavity can often wait a few weeks. A deep cleaning for early gum disease might be phased over two appointments. You always have control over the pace of your care.

FAQ

General Dentistry: Common Questions

How often should I see a dentist?

Most patients benefit from exams and cleanings every six months. This cadence helps us catch problems early, monitor existing work, and reinforce your home routine. Patients with a history of decay, gum disease, or health conditions like diabetes might benefit from more frequent visits, like every three to four months. Dr. Bonin will recommend a schedule based on your individual risk and health status.

I haven't been to the dentist in five years. What should I expect?

Your first appointment might be longer than a routine visit because we're building a complete picture. You'll likely have full-mouth X-rays, a detailed exam, and possibly a more thorough cleaning to remove years of buildup. Dr. Bonin will be straightforward about what he finds but not alarmist. Most people in this situation have treatable issues, not emergencies. We'll prioritize what needs immediate attention and give you a realistic plan for the rest.

Do I really need X-rays if I can't see any problems?

Yes. About one-third of tooth decay happens between teeth or under existing fillings, places your eyes can't see. X-rays also show bone levels, tooth roots, and early signs of disease. Digital X-rays use very low radiation and are safe, even for patients who are pregnant (though we take extra precautions). We only take images we believe are clinically necessary.

What's the difference between a cleaning and a deep cleaning?

A routine cleaning (prophylaxis) removes plaque and tartar from above and just below the gumline. A deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) is performed when gum disease has progressed and you have pockets between tooth and gum where bacteria hide. Deep cleaning goes below the gumline to smooth tooth roots and reduce pocket depth. We only recommend deep cleaning if your exam findings and gum health status indicate it's needed.

Will the dentist tell me if something is wrong?

Absolutely. Dr. Bonin is direct about findings. He'll explain what he sees, why it matters, and what your options are. He won't recommend treatment you don't need, and he won't hide problems hoping you'll ignore them. Honest communication is part of building a long-term relationship with a dentist you can trust.

What if I'm nervous about dental visits?

Many patients have anxiety about dentistry. Bonin Dental Care offers nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and oral sedation to help you relax. Let us know your concerns when you call to schedule, and we'll discuss what might help. Dr. Bonin moves at your pace and stops if you signal discomfort. You're always in control.

Do you take insurance?

We file insurance claims as a courtesy. Call us at (707) 838-1400 with your plan details and we'll verify your coverage for you. For patients without insurance or with high deductibles, patient financing options may be available.

How is Bonin Dental Care different from other dental offices?

Dr. Bonin's training includes a U.S. Navy General Practice Residency and 24 years of clinical experience. Our practice focuses on prevention and long-term relationships rather than quick fixes. We invest time in explaining what's happening in your mouth, we use current technology, and we listen to what matters to you. Our 5.0-star rating reflects patients' experience of being heard and cared for.
